Understanding What The Boards In LCD TVs, Like The T-Con D50ud1 Actually Do

By Henry Patterson

Once upon a time televisions were mostly made up of tubes encased in wood, wires, knobs, scanners, and rabbit ears. As with most things, televisions have become much more complicated and technical in today's world. Even though you may not have any plans to become a television repair person, you might still be interested in learning about the boards, such as the T-Con d50ud1, inside LCD tvs, if the science of electronics intrigues you.

When you open the back of an LCD television, you will most likely find the power supply module, or power supply board, located on the right side the back when you're looking at it. The power supply board is going to be the heaviest and biggest board on the back of your set. The function of the power supply board is to convert alternating current supply, or AC, which has the ability to change directions, to direct current voltage, DC.

The direct current will only move in one direction. This is what the circuit in LCD televisions uses. Depending on the model you have the power supply module and the inverter board may be combined. If you're not getting any power, or only intermittent power, the power supply board may be to blame.

The T-Con, or timing control board, is the board on the television that is the smallest. Only LCD tvs use it. You should look for it under its shield which will be on the top back of the television.

The purpose of the T-con board is to control the circuit and TFT, or thin film transistor, driver. Indications that you have trouble with the T-con board will be vertical or horizontal lines. You might also see a double image, a white screen or no display.

You'll find the inverter board on one edge of the back panel. You won't find it at all unless you have an LCD tv. The purpose of the inverter board is to convert the low voltage DC that is supplied by the switched mode power supply. It turns the low voltage into high AC. This is what causes the backlights to light up. The inverter board and the power board are sometimes found together. You may have a problem with an inverter board when you see a dim screen, or when the display completely shuts down.

The main board is also known as the logic board, the digital board, the main module, and the mother board. You will recognize the main board because it is the one with the video and sound outputs and inputs attached to it. The main board takes in signals and converts the analog signals into digital. The main board may be malfunctioning when you don't have sound or color or a picture.

Sometimes the audio receiving or jackpack board is separated from the mother board. The jackpack takes the sound signal to the processor and moves it to the amplifier. The amplifier drives the speakers located on both sides of the television. The jackpack may be your problem if you experience no sound, high pitched sound, or channels that randomly change.
