What To Look For In Bows Compound And Recurve

By Kevin Meyer

Many people see archery portrayed in television shows and movies and become curious about the sport. It takes a lot of concentration and practice to get good. Having a natural sense of aim doesn't hurt either. If you are thinking about taking up shooting with bows compound and recurve bows may seem confusing and possibly even frightening. Here is what you need to know about each kind of bow and how to tell which one is right for you.

Bows have been used for hunting and for military uses for many, many years. They could be made using materials that are common in many parts of the world and were quite effective at launching a missile (in this case an arrow) for long distances. In some cases, as technology refined the bow making process, it became possible to cause arrows to hit targets with incredible force.

The most basic style is known as a recurve. This style has a single bow string that extends from one end of the weapon to the other. The string is too short for the weapon and when it is strung, the arms are pulled down making it curve and generating a lot more force than would otherwise be available.

You may have seen bows that look quite different from ones you have seen in historical television shows and movies. These usually have shorter arms and feature what looks like several strings. This style of bow is a compound bow. The wheels that you see on the bow have a very important function. They make it so that the string can be drawn back and, once a certain point has been reached, the bow can be kept in a drawn position using much less effort than it would take to hold a recurve bow.

Regardless of which kind of bow you get you will need to make sure that it suits your body. You need to know your draw weight. This is the amount of tension on a bow string and it indicates how hard you have to pull on the string in order to shoot an arrow. Compound bows have a weight range while recurve bows tend to have more of a fixed draw weight.

You also need to consider what your draw length is when you are choosing a compound bow. You need to make sure that you are buying a bow that you can draw all the way back. You also need to be careful that you are not getting a bow that has too short a draw length. Each of these things will make it so that it is less comfortable and less easy for you to draw and hold your position while you are aiming.

If you are buying a compound model you may want to think about whether you want a bow that comes as a set or whether you want to add other accessories to it. There are many accessories that will make it easier for you to shoot. These include counterweights and sights although there are many others that you can purchase over time. Generally, a set will end up saving you money although you may want to upgrade some components at a later date.

You can find bows and other items online as well as in stores. Just remember that you may need to get your bow adjusted by an experienced technician even if you buy it online. That way it will be easier for you to shoot successfully which can make archery much more fun in the long run.
