Insights In Teaching Blind And Visually Impaired Readers

By Susan Hughes

If you want to spend your time with a special child, then there are some things that you have to know. Remember that blind and visually impaired readers Atlanta need special attention for them to cope up with the demanding world. So, you ought to be fully prepared to be the best source of assistance which they can get right now.

You ought to provide them all the hours they need to inspect the tools which they shall be using on their first day. Everything would see new at this point so you have to give a brief introduction for every object they touch. Allow them to explore greatly and always show that one is calm with the environment that you got yourself into.

Orienting them to everything is the key for their anxiety to go away. So, be confident as their teacher and try to introduce them to some of their new classmates if they are up for it. They do not have to do this on their own. When they are having trouble understanding some aspects of the lesson, then they already have a friend to lean on to.

If they show a little fire of independence, let them be. If they remain to be open to your help on an occasional basis, then you are truly on the right track. These children need to challenge themselves every once in a while. Do not damper that spirit in them because as their teacher, you need to do the exact opposite.

Make them listen to your voice all the time. Also, try to promote complete silence when one student is speaking. Respect has to be practiced in different forms and do not be too lenient with this virtue. A child may lack one vital organ but that does not mean that he or she cannot have all the good values in the world.

Be sure that the act of raising hands will still be practiced in here. Nothing much has to change except for the reading materials which are going to be used. They may have a special case but you will be surprised with their determination to be just like everybody else. You are the bridge to this goal. Be steadfast to your mission.

If a child is just visually impaired, then make an effort in placing him near the studying materials on the board. Do not give them any reason to get lazy and not to focus. They are here to study and you need to be the main instrument for them to achieve their goal at this point in time. Stand on your ground for the future of today.

Always call them on a first name basis. This would catch their attention and make them feel valued when you give positive reinforcement. As you can see, the tiniest details go a long way.

Lastly, you must be persistent more than anything else. In that situation, you can handle the concerns of everyone for sure. That is essential when the children have low self esteem to begin with. Build them up at this point.
