The Use Of Moldavite Crystal

By Thomas Phillips

This unusual crystal is believed to have very strong energy and many people have a strong reaction to it when they first touch or hold a piece. Moldavite crystal is very rare and can only be found in Czechoslovakia. It was discovered hundreds of years ago and was thought to originate from a meteor that hit the earth millions of years ago, scattering molten fragments as it entered the earth's atmosphere.

Concentrated in one area to a large extent, small pieces of the semi-precious stone is also commonly found a large distance away with variances in the colour and texture of the stone. Scientists generally believe that this scatter effect was caused by the meteor melting and liquefying as it breached our atmosphere. The molten meteor splattered over a great distance before its final resting place. From there, pieces have also found their way into streams and rivers over the millions of years, washing further away. Locally found pieces are up to twenty centimeters below the soil surface.

The crystal is not very strong or sturdy, with a composition very similar to manmade glass. Often described as mossy, forest or olive green, pieces have also been found that display a brownish green tint. In the clearer samples found, it is easy to see the wrinkles and eddies within. Moldavite is popularly made into pendants and earrings, and in days gone by was held in high regard as a spiritual charm, as well as a protection for good luck and fertility.

Being as soft as glass in terms of gemstone strength, the Moldavite does not fare well unless it is set into a protective setting, either as a pendant wrapped in wire, or protected in earrings or rings with a metal bezel. Over time and with much use, the stone will wear and lose its high sheen, as well as possibly being damaged.

Folklore surrounds this particular stone in its area of origin, with many believing that it was an emerald that fell out of Lucifer's crown as he was cast out of heaven. It was a valued gift given to young couples to bring harmony and peace to their marriage. The highly prized stone was later restricted to those of noble or royal birth in ancient times and used as adornments in walking sticks.

Many consider the power of the crystal to be of the ongoing renewal of the earth. It is meant to assist in nurturing and protection as well as promote the wearers own spiritual growth. On its own, meditation is used to bring calm and relaxation, ridding the body and mind of stress. There have been many reports of people using Moldavite while meditating and experiencing visionary states and out of body travel.

Once the stone is placed in the hand it will aid in calming the mind and allowing one to see inward towards knowledge and perfection. Many people will report that they feel a tingling feeling when handling the gem, or a hot sensation within their chest, rising up to the face, so it is advised that anyone dealing with it for the first time be cautious and build up a tolerance for the Moldavite and get used to having it in close proximity.

Some of Moldavite crystals stronger qualities are the philosophic power as well as the energy that it carries which makes it very easy for most people to connect to. The gem prevents negative energies from attaching to the user as well as helping to separate them from unhealthy relationships.
