By Elizabeth Richardson

Actually, the term walker refers to any device, tool or equipment that is used in order to provide movement support. This additional support is offered for sustainability and balance during motion. They were invented in frame forms only and these were the only tools that were used in those days. New developments, innovations, inventions, and advancements have been made over time leading to emergence of a walker with wheels and seat commonly referred to as a rollators. This device has a competitive edge over other moving frames and wheelchairs.

It was ideally invented by a polio patient when looking for a walking device. This is an instrument constructed using either four or three wheels that are able to rotate freely. It also comprises of two handlebars, sitting place and others a basket. It also contains a braking system fixed in the handlebars. These characteristics make it convenient for use as the user can stop at any given point either when resting or doing other activities.

One of the characteristic that gives it an advantage over the others is the availability of adjustments. They can be made to reach the required height and length. This is a characteristic that is not found in general wheelchairs. They are also very light when it comes to weight and therefore making them very easy to carry when storing.

Brake system is attached to the handlebars and this makes the operator to access use of brakes easily. The movement of the hand brakes also can be used according to necessity. For instance, during emergency, the operator will push them far downwards for emergency stop. When in controlling speed, he will have to pull them upwards slightly in order to minimize speed.

Users can be able to turn rapidly when there is an obstacle. The fitted emergency brakes ensure that the rollator can respond to any kind of a situation. If you want an automated machine the technicians can fit an engine that makes sure that the machine moves at a high speed. The engine makes the tool a reliable means of transport. The automation has attracted a big number of young people towards using the walker for transport.

When a person is using this device, his or her mind is at peace as it is not necessary to have a helper with him always. This is attained through the independence created by its use. The ability to remove, fold and adjust the device and seat makes it easy for the user to control himself when climbing down or up. The baskets in them are used by users in keeping their belongings.

Consultations however should be done so that the best tool is bought for the right purpose. For example, recovery helping tool, fitness and completely disabled walkers are totally different. A medical practitioner should be the best to consult.

One of the disadvantage associated with them is the initial purchase cost. They are not cheap at all. It is also not logical to spend large sum of money to buy a tool which you will use for like one month and discard mostly for recovering patients.
