Undertaking A Guitar Amp Repair

By Donald Wilson

Whether using a tube amplifier or a solid state model they both need maintenance, servicing and often problems fixed. From time to time many musicians will require a guitar amp repair. There are a few things to consider before undertaking this work.

There are two main kinds of amplifier that are commonly used. There is a stand alone head unit, popular with pro musicians or a combination model with integrated speakers. The price of repairs or inspections will vary significantly depending on how many parts are needed and the complexity of the job.

A valve amplifier will require routine inspections to keep it functioning properly and safely. Most musicians will keep spare valves with them, especially if performing regularly and it is important that the correct tubes are used. When servicing or fixing a tube model it is advisable to have an expert carry out the work due to the voltages involved. Also by entrusting the work to a professional the repairs will be covered by a guarantee.

Solid state models are a little easier to work on and maintain in the home or by the amateur electrician. Small faults can be fixed using everyday tools and do not take a lot of time to complete. If the breakdown or failure is more serious then it is always a good idea to have the job done by an expert and most musical instrument stores will offer this service.

When sourcing parts for repairs many internet based companies can supply these or high street music retailers. Always check that the components are the correct specification for the model in question and that they are covered by a guarantee in case of failure. Used parts can also be fitted if on a tight budget especially if replacing speakers or control pots.

When you are buying replacement parts there are a couple of things to think about beforehand. It is always good practice to buy original parts if they are available, even very old vintage models can still be repaired using factory parts and this helps to maintain the value. Again due to the high value of some older amps it is highly recommended to have either the manufacturer or an authorized outlet carry out the job.

There are many books and internet tutorials available to help the DIY repairer to carry out a fix. It is essential to make sure that you have the right parts and tools when undertaking this work at home and that all safety measures are in place. After completing the work the amplifier should always be tested by a certified electrician as if performing live. Many venues will require the equipment to have this paperwork for insurance purposes.

The price of these repairs or servicing will alter according to how many parts are needed and the hours required to complete the work. A small fault can be rectified for just a few dollars but a more complicated job or refurbishment can run into thousands. Also be aware that if the amp has to be sent away for repair then the carriage and postage costs will have to be factored into the total price of the job.
