Hair Raising And Hair Cutting Stories

By Alyce Larson

Often times you will find yourself asking stylish friends, 'where did you get that haircut?' with a mix of envy and hope. It seems that the most advice and recommendations required are in the field of hairdressing. Most people need this helping hand because, frankly, it is more likely that a hairdresser will mess things up than make you look like a pop star. Everyone has their nightmare hair cutting stories.

The hair is fifty percent of a woman's (and a man's) beauty. If you go wrong with that, you compromise the whole look. Anthropologists say that the hair is a very important factor in finding a mate. The shinier and bouncier, the more likely you are to find a suitable partner, as this reflects youth and vitality. A person's haircut can be a very powerful attribute.

It is a good idea, when visiting the salon, to ask the stylist to cut off less than you really want. Some ask for just the most minuscule trim, only to watch the stylist chop off an inch. However, these psychological techniques don't always work. One person, trying a new barber, had his head practically shaved because the hairdresser was wrapped up in her favorite soap opera.

There are those stylists that do not even listen to what you want in the first place. Maybe they have a better idea, though the results say the opposite. You would like an elegant, layered look, only to emerge from the salon resembling a page boy. They will then insist that this is the style you asked for. There is no woman who wants to leave a hairdressers looking like a man. Nor the other way round.

It can really be quite embarrassing. You wonder how you are going to confront the hairdresser. Clearly, getting a haircut is what you receive as a service, and something you must pay for. You also hope that these people are reasonable. An extreme example could be to refuse to pay, but it might shock the hairdresser into being more attentive in the future.

You can complain about your botched hairdo by crying and wailing loudly outside of the salon. This is very bad publicity for them. The stylists will certainly not like that and will most likely usher you back in to have your tresses redone. This is not a guarantee that they will treat you in any way pleasantly.

Then there are the at-home haircuts that you may give yourself. Nobody is exempt from this crime. Everyone is guilty of cutting their own fringe or getting a friend to give them a trim. You should be very surprised if the results are positive. Unless you are a very skilled self-stylist, you will look very silly.

The moral of the story is that once you find a hairdresser you know and trust, you should keep them. Learn their name. Give them presents at Christmas and their birthdays. They are very special people. Otherwise prepare yourself to be doomed to embarrassing hair cutting stories forevermore.
