Ultrasonic Dental Cleaning For Deep Cleaning

By Grace Daniels

Many people try to avoid going to the dentist. However, having your teeth feel so thoroughly clean is definitely worth the hassle and discomfort of a dentist visit. In the past, dentist's only had one option for teeth scaling, which was to manually scale your teeth. This was very tedious and time consuming. Now there is a newer option called ultrasonic dental cleaning, which is able to scale your teeth in a fraction of the time.

The widespread availability of soda, sugary foods, and the like, means that tooth decay, staining, gingivitis, and gum disease are rampant. The use of tobacco products and smoking are also very common and very bad for teeth. Virtually everyone has dealt with bleeding, puffy gums or stained teeth at some point in their life. In our culture these things are very common and a big problem. The consumption and use of sugary substances and tobacco products can cause an overgrowth of bacteria which contribute to these problems.

These problems not only cause your smile to be less than perfect, they also can cause pain and lead to other problems. The health of your whole body begins in your mouth so good oral health is extremely important. Luckily, gingivitis and gum disease can usually be reversed by a proper deep cleaning at your dentist's office.

Of course it is best to prevent gingivitis and tooth decay in the first place. This can be done by avoiding foods and drinks that contribute to it. Good oral hygiene on a daily basis, including brushing and flossing regularly, is also very important. When these measures fail, and even when they don't, regular cleanings at your dentist's office are very important.

Different dentist offices use different techniques to get teeth clean. There are two options, either manual or ultrasonic scaling. When teeth are scaled manually the dental hygienist actually scrapes your teeth one by one to remove the buildup of bacteria and plaque. While this is effective, it does take a long time, and the repetitive and tedious work can cause pain in the hygienist's wrists. Of course it isn't comfortable for the patient either since you have to have someone scraping around in your mouth for an extended time.

Ultrasonic cleaning is the second option when it comes to scaling teeth. This uses very fast vibrations to clean the teeth in much less time. The teeth are cleaned in the same thorough manner as with a manual cleaning, but it can be easier on both the patient and the hygienist because it takes much less time.

Since the ultrasonic technology uses fast vibrations you may feel a tingling on your gums or even a little bit of a "zinging" feeling on your teeth. This is normal and doesn't last long. It's also possible that the vibrations will cause the hygienist's hand to be numb, but this is only temporary.

Your dentist may also choose a third option which is to use both manual dental cleaning and ultrasonic dental cleaning. This can cause a cleaner feeling than either one would on their own. This may be particularly important if you are attempting to reverse the damage of gum disease or gingivitis.
